As I previously mentioned, I really like what you can do with High Dynamic Range Images (HDRI) and Exposure Blending. It seems, Spiegel-Online thinks the same

And since my page stats claim that I am not the only one interested in open source tools for this kind of stuff, I wanted to share with you this tool, which is able to create and tonemap HDR images: QTPFSGUI.
QTPFSGUI is basically designed to be an open source replacement for Photomatix. Still “work in progress”, but already good enough for some experimenting.
But be warned, tonemapping comes with half a dozen algorithms, each with >3 sliders to adjust settings and I for my part don’t know how to use them effectively, so far:

On the other hand, tools like krita or gimp might integrate HDR.
