Da ich zu meinem Geburtstag ein wunderbar portables Stativ bekommen hatte, habe ich vor 2 Wochen, bei Rhein in Flammen in Bonn, einen ersten Feldversuch unternommen.

Da ich mich damit auch das erste Mal überhaupt an Nachtaufnahmen / Feuerwerk gewagt habe, hatte ich bereits das Schlimmste befürchtet. Zumal ich nur etwa 10 Minuten geknippst und den Rest der Zeit lieber das Feuerwerk mit Nicole genossen hatte.

Aber zu meinem Erstaunen waren doch ein paar ordentliche Bilder dabei, wobei ich im Nachhinein sagen muss, dass ich an einigen Stellen die Belichtungszeit noch wesentlich kürzer hätte wählen können.

Vielleicht erfreuen ja die Bilder einige Bonn-verbundene, die nicht mehr hier leben. Als Standort zum Feuerwerk betrachten kann ich übrigens nur unsere aktuelle Wahl empfehlen: mit der 62 nach Oberkassel und dann hinterm Bahnhof an den Rhein, auf der anderen Seite in der Rheinaue hätte ich sicher nicht gewagt, meine Ausrüstung aufzubauen.

Also gibt es nicht mehr, als Besserung zu loben. Nicht, dass sich hier nichts getan hätte: Ich habe wordpress von meiner uralt Verison (von 2.0.irgendwas auf 2.5.1), was auch erstaunlich einfach und reibungslos ablief.

Zudem habe ich noch meine Bildergalerien von jalbum auf gallery2 umgestellt, einfach weil mir das lokale Erstellen der HTML-Gallerien zu umständlich war. Zudem lässt sich gallery2 auch wunderbar direkt in Wordpress integrieren, wie man an meiner Sidebar sieht.

Und ganz in der Tradition meines allerersten Postings beginne ich direkt mit einigen Bildern meines neusten Spielzeugs, einer Canon EOS 40D.

As I previously mentioned, I really like what you can do with High Dynamic Range Images (HDRI) and Exposure Blending. It seems, Spiegel-Online thinks the same [1] [2] [3] [4] [5]

And since my page stats claim that I am not the only one interested in open source tools for this kind of stuff, I wanted to share with you this tool, which is able to create and tonemap HDR images: QTPFSGUI.

QTPFSGUI is basically designed to be an open source replacement for Photomatix. Still “work in progress”, but already good enough for some experimenting.

But be warned, tonemapping comes with half a dozen algorithms, each with >3 sliders to adjust settings and I for my part don’t know how to use them effectively, so far:

On the other hand, tools like krita or gimp might integrate HDR.

Hier kurze ein “Praxistipp”, den ich kürzlich für mich entdeckt habe, in Verbindung mit digikam. Wir haben den nicht ungewöhnliche Fall, dass man von einem Ereignis hunderte Fotos hat, aber nur eine Auswahl davon brennen, online veröffentlichen, … möchte.

Ich tagge in einem solchen Fall einfach alle gewünschten Bilder (z.B. mit “best of panoramas”) markiere alle Bilder im Tag-View und drag-drop’e sie in den Filemanager meiner Wahl in ein vorher angelegtes Projekt-Verzeichnis. Beim droppen mit der linken Maustaste sage ich dann “Link here”. Da die meisten Programme symbolic links folgen ist das eigentlich eine sehr platzschonende Variante. Nicht gerade revolutionär, aber für mich funktioniert’s (Ich benutze symbolic links sonst viel zu selten)

Apropos “Filemanager meiner Wahl”: Seit etwa zwei Wochen habe ich da einen neuen Favoriten, Dolphin. An die Navigationbar kann man sich extrem schnell gewöhnen. Als alter Total-Commander/Midnight Commander/ …. -Fan nutze ich Dolphin natürlich im Splitview.

Und ja, ich bin mir der Parallelen zum Apfel bewusst, aber mein KDE-Desktop hat eh schon die ein oder andere Ähnlichkeit mit OS X

Die beiden unbeliebtesten Kopfgrafiken werde ich Ende der Woche aus der Rotation nehmen. Also, stimmt nochmals ab, damit nicht Euer Favorite in der Versenkung verschwindet.

But not a [...]]]> Just did some experimenting with exposure blending. As I am not even remotely familiar with 2D image manipulation, I did not expect any results at all.

On friday night (about 8 p.m.) Nicole and I went to get some fresh air, in Bonn’s Rheinaue. Weather was nice, beautiful sky, water, trees and grass. But not a chance to get everything correctly exposed in one shot. Perfect situation for exposure blending. I did the simple version:

• take a light version

• take a dark version

• layer those over each other and cut the dark/light parts from the top layer

The result is far away from being perfect, I am not good at all using gimp’s magic wand (see the ugly dark-light change at the top of the trees). But I think, if you’re fit at doing these things, it’s a real easy way of producing nice pictures without checking for the right exposure-settings for hours, if possible at all.

Maybe I will now read this article and look, how I should have done it

Another approach to exposure blending stacks the diferently exposed pictures over each other, not opaque, but with lowered opacity. Then for each layer brightness curves are adjusted to only show certain brightness levels. Probably a much softer blending mechanism, eliminating any possible edges between the different pictures.
Just to mention, most people do not like exposure blending, but prefer producing HDR (High Dynamic Range) pictures instead, with 12, 16 or more Bit per color, in order to balance out over/under exposed parts afterwards.

talking about exposure experiments:

On this shot I misused my bicycles handle bar as tripod, shut the lense close (f/8.0), ISO fixed on 50 (as I do on almost every shot now) and exposure time to 1/3 sec. I was pretty surprised by the result. Did not think that this effect was that easy to achive, need to try these things more often
